£2.3m bill for police back-up

Clumsy police drivers have run up a £2.3million repair bill for accidents as they reversed their patrol cars.

Most of the mishaps were minor parking prangs as officers backed into bollards or clipped buildings and other cars.

But taxpayers’ cash is paying for the damage as insurance premiums and excesses are so high that the forces do not claim.

The £2,348,757 cost could have paid for 100 newly-qualified PCs, reports The Sun.
