Is there anyone who teaches elementary or high school with criminal backgrounds (misdemeanors)?

I have an assault charge that happened when i was 19(over some dumb boy who i’m not even married to), sophomore in college, I’ve never been in anything other than that, I haven’t even gotten a speeding ticket b4, I am married to a wonderful man and expecting a first child and I desperately want to work with children, i’m going to school now for my teachers certification (I already have a BA in Psychology that I recvd back in 2005). I have tons of experience working w/kids….anybody become a teacher or know anyone who became one even with a misdemeanor criminal background?

They run background checks. It is very hard to get a teaching job to begin with so having a criminal background would make it harder. If you are a good and caring person you probably will get hired eventually. I always tell people going into the profession to be patient and keep trying even when you feel like you are never going to be hired. It will prbably be tough but if it is what you really want to do you will get hired. Just keep trying and dont give up. It took me only 2 years to get hired but I know people who have been applying for jobs for 4 years now and still dont have a job. Even without having a criminal background. Just keep trying and dont give up, good luck!
In order to become a teacher, you have to have an FBI background check. I’m not sure about your misdemeanor – it may depend on your state. Since you are in college now, I would ask the certification specialist at your school. It’s better to find out now that get all the way through and find out you can’t do it. (You’ll have to get the clearance before you do any practicum work anyway).
